Over the last few weeks, I've had to ask several people what they think is the greatest recent invention of the last few years for job purposes. The overwhelming response has been the iPhone. I'll be the first to admit that the iPhone has indeed changed my life and is never far from my reach, but I'd hardly qualify it as the recent 'greatest invention.'
Instead, my vote goes to the Goody Spin Pins.
Goody claims that each Spin Pin is equivalent to 20 bobby pins. Frankly, I've never given this a thorough Myth Busters test or anything, but I find these babies pretty dang helpful when trying to create the ever-popular 'messy bun' while simultaneously trying to keep my hair off my neck in the teeth of this Texas summer.
I start with a ponytail that I haphazardly throw into a basic black elastic band, usually with half of my hair 'stuck' halfway through (this can be on the crown of your head for a top knot, at your occipital bone for a messy bun on the back of your head, or at the nape of your neck for a low bun). Then, I grab the whole thing and pull a second elastic band over the wad of hair. (Yes, it literally feels like a wad of hair in my hands, but this keeps all of the ends wrapped up instead of sticking out of my head Phoebe Buffay style.)
At this point, feel free to lightly tug some pieces of your hair to create volume after both elastic bands have captured all of that hair. When you're pulling at your ponytail/messy bun hybrid, be sure to also pull some hair away from your scalp to make the style less severe looking. If your fingers don't get the job done, use the 'stick end' of a comb to lift some hair away from your scalp with more precision.
At this point, it seems like the messy bun starts to droop a little from the weight of all that hair. This is when the greatest invention of recent time comes into play.
I 'screw' the top half of the messy bun towards the top of my head, and then do the same with the bottom half and the remaining spin pin. This also hides the black elastic bands and it becomes hard to tell that everything began with a pretty half-hearted ponytail!
The Spin Pins never slip and are excellent for all-day wear. I truly cannot express enough how much I love my Spin Pins. |

Keep calm and Spin Pin, friends!!!
I just added these to my shopping list! Bobby pins fall out of my hair at an alarming rate.
